Mark 1: 29-39. In this week's gospel Jesus experiences a popular response to his healing work in Galilee. Many hear what he has done and come out to see him. He cures many, but When the morning comes, he goes out by himself to find a place to pray. The disciples want him to continue to see the people, but Jesus has other plans.

The Son of Man separates the people, the righteous from the unrighteous. One aspect of what divides the two groups comes down to something as simple as "how did you respond to human need."

Rather than answer directly, Jesus tells them a story of two brothers, one of whom says he will do what his father asks, but doesn't, while the other refuses to help at first, but then does do what was asked. According to Jesus it is one thing to say the right thing, and another to do it.

He tells of a man whose generosity toward some (but not all) of his workers creates jealousy and anger. One group received exactly what they agreed to as a fair wage for the day. But when they see others receiving the same pay for less work, they can't stand it. Jesus wants to show that God's grace operates differently from our ideas of justice and equality.

During the night an enemy has sowed weeds among a farmer's wheat, but when the farmer's servants ask if they should pull the weeds, the farmer says "no." That will only make the situation worse. Jesus seems to suggest that the best approach to evil is not to be distracted by it. When we let our enemies set our course, we may actually be drawn into doing evil's work for it.

You can see what the Spirit is up to, by the movement of the things it touches. But you don't know where it came from, or even less where it is going.

During Lent, we walk with him from his temptation in the desert to his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The story does not end there, we know. But this week we pay attention to how it all begins....

John 1: 29-42. Some of Jesus' first disciples were already followers of John the Baptist who go to see what John means when he calls Jesus the Lamb of God. Jesus sees them following and invites them to "come and See." In part, the story illustrates how some people come to faith. We may not remember when we began to believe or know exactly the moment it happened or, like John's disciples, may have been influenced by seeing the difference faith has made in the life of another, and when we open ourselves to that possibility, we find that we see the world differently, ourselves.

Yet this story takes place out of the sight of the famous and powerful. The angels announce the good news to shepherds, out in the fields. The baby Jesus is born in the humblest of conditions, welcomed into the world almost as a refugee.

Luke 18: 9-14. This week's gospel continues a series of parables that go against conventional ideas of personal righteousness. Jesus tells the story of two men who go to the temple to pray. One of them is an upstanding citizen, and the other is a complete moral failure, a tax collector. Whereas the righteous man thanks God for not making him like the other guy, the tax collector's prayer is a pure plea for mercy. Jesus says that only one of the men went home that day justified in the eyes of God.

2 Corinthians 9: 6 - 15. In this week's scripture, we hear Paul offering encouragement to the Christians in Corinth. He is worried that his relationship with this church, which he has founded, has not gone well lately. He discovers that things are not as bad as he thought. In the light of that new hope, he invites them to share their generosity with other Christians, who are having a harder time. It is an understanding of generosity and giving which we can still follow today.

Luke 17: 11 - 19. This week's gospel is a story of healing and hope. A group of lepers calls out to Jesus from the side of the road. He sees them and sends them on their way, telling them to present themselves in the temple. As they go, they discover that they are already healed. God does not wait till they have completed Jesus' instructions to make them well. As it turns out, only one of the ten returns to express his gratitude. But lack of thankfulness does not cancel the healing. Grace does not depend on the gratitude of the receiver.

Yet, after death, when the rich man suffers in torment while Lazarus rests in heaven at Abraham's side, the rich man sees Lazarus quite clearly from afar. The rich man pleads for water, but Abraham says it is too late. It seems that our actions, or inactions, in this life carry over into the next.

Abraham and Sarah set off from home, relying on the promise of God, and although it was never completely fulfilled during their lifetime, still they trusted in the One who made the promise. Like them, while we cannot see where God is leading us, we travel in good company.

Jews from every nation have gathered for the Feast of Weeks - originally celebrated seven weeks after the beginning of the grain harvest and later became Pentecost as it was celebrated 50 days after Passover. The disciples have gathered among the people for Pentecost when they receive an amazing gift that can unite all of humanity once again if only the people have the ears to hear.

What they have seen and learned will be their foundation, but the future will take them even further - down roads they have yet to see or imagine.

John 10: 22-30. Jesus described his relationship to his followers as that of a shepherd to a flock of sheep. Such a relationship is one of close following, of trust and dependence. Some of us may not find the sheep image especially flattering - they are not known for intelligence or judgment. But the picture of Jesus as a shepherd is familiar and comforting. It expresses the compassion of God for those who are lost and alone, who wander through the wilderness of their lives.

He is seen as a threat by those in power. He acts calmly, and intentionally, refusing to be swayed by fear. He offers forgiveness and hope, even to the end.

Luke 4: 14-21. In the weeks after Christmas we watch as Jesus begins to move out into the world, showing by word and deed the fullness of his identity. From his baptism, to his first miracle, we move on to the first sermon Jesus ever delivers. It takes place in front of his home congregation, in the synagogue in Nazareth, where he reads to the people from the prophet Isaiah. The sermon itself is very short - just one sentence long. But it draws on a long history of God's involvement with the human family. And it stakes a claim on our present and future as well. In just a few short words we begin to see the scope of Jesus' whole ministry.

But Jesus has other priorities than simply solving a drink shortage. Something more is going on that afternoon. But not everyone can see it. Most of those involved in the events, from Jesus' own mother to the wine steward, are preoccupied with logistics. But Jesus offers, to those who see it, a sign of God's glory.

John 1: 1-18. In today's scripture, John gets his turn to tell the Christmas story. Unlike the gradual unfolding of Jesus' identity in the other gospels, John's gospel tells us up-front who Jesus is and what he means - "The Word became flesh and lived among us . . . full of grace and truth."
