Family Ministries

Family Ministries offers a range of programs which provide education, recreation, support, and encouragement to individuals and families throughout their life span. We acknowledge the needs of members of our church family and those in our community to connect meaningfully with each other, to form strong and compassionate family relationships, to parent wisely and well, to grow intellectually and spiritually, and to cope with and learn from the inevitable challenges we all experience.

Our programs throughout the year include: premarital counseling for couples being married at RHUMC, marriage enrichment seminars, and adult spiritual retreats. Our parenting classes address the needs of parents with children from infancy through teens. Book discussions allow participants to form meaningful relationships with others in small groups. Short-term support groups to address bereavement and other adult issues are offered annually.

Recreational programs, and our community lecture series, bring the generations together for learning, fun and fellowship. For more information please call 310-377-6771 ext. 105 or familyministries@rhumc.org

Upcoming Events

March 7 - 6:30pm: Purposeful Readers group will meet to discuss My Stroke of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor.

Amazon.com describes the book this way: On the morning of December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist, experienced a massive stroke when a blood vessel exploded in the left side of her brain. A neuroanatomist by profession, she observed her own mind completely deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life, all within the space of four brief hours.

In My Stroke of Insight, Taylor shares her unique perspective on the brain and its capacity for recovery, and the sense of omniscient understanding she gained from this unusual and inspiring voyage out of the abyss of a wounded brain. Today Taylor is convinced that the stroke was the best thing that could have happened to her. By stepping to the right of our left brains, we can all uncover the feelings of well-being and peace that are so often sidelined by our own brain chatter.

March 14 - 1:00pm: Annual Whale Watching Expedition at the Redondo Beach Marina, 181 N. Harbor Drive, Redondo Beach.

It's that time again! The whales are migrating, and we are going to see how many we can see. Our ship is the Redondo Beach Voyager. The cost is $10 per person, and 10% of the proceeds go to the American Cetacean Society. Our own Dave Whitman will be the naturalist aboard, to help us spot the whales and tell us about the behavior which we will be observing. There is an 85% chance that we will see whales, but there are also sea lions, dolphins, gulls and pelicans to observe. Be sure to sign up early. We have reserved 70 spots, but last year we sold out.

You can sign up on the church patio on Sunday mornings, or email familyministries@rhumc.org, or call the family ministries office at 310-377- 6771 x 105.

March 21 - 6:30pm: Taco Night
Our Taco Night is usually the last Sunday of the month, after 3rd Service, but because the Holy Week Concert will be on March 28 at 7:30pm, we decided to move Taco Night to March 21, which is Youth Sunday – a perfect fit!
